Godly Contentment

1 Timothy 6:6
Now godliness with contentment is great gain.

Godly contentment is finding great joy in what God has given to us. It will lead to inner peace and satisfaction. This deep sense of peace and contentment is not dependent on external circumstances or the possessions of material things whether in abundance or not.

Godly contentment is an inner peace and satisfaction, resulting from trusting God, being satisfied with God's will, provision, and plan for our life, regardless of our good or bad circumstances. God is good all the time, in our good or bad times!

It is a heavenly virtue characterized by thankfulness, gratitude and faith in God. Through it, we will have a quiet understanding that true wealth lies in godliness and contentment as long as life's essentials and necessities, such as having food and clothings, are provided.

This divine perspective helps us to stop worrying about life or comparing ourselves with others. As we do so, we will have great spiritual gain and inner peace.

When we came into the world, we brought nothing. And when we die, we can take nothing out. So, if we have food and clothes, we will be satisfied with that.

The direct opposite of godly contentment is greed. Greed will destroy our capacity to enjoy what God has given. Those who are greedy, wanting to become rich, will bring many temptations to themselves. They are caught in a trap. They begin to do many foolish things that will hurt them, things that ruin and destroy people.

The love of money causes all kinds of evil. Some people have left the true faith because they want to get more and more money. But they have caused themselves much sorrow.

Godly contentment is a Christian grace that grows over time. It does not come quickly, easily or naturally. It is nurtured through a daily and continual trust in God's providence. A simple but firm belief in God's wise and loving care that leads to satisfaction with His decisions and provisions for our life.

As we have godliness with contentment, we become grateful for all the blessings God has bestowed upon us. A new day to live and a new day to love God and others! This attitude of thankfulness simply acknowledges and appreciates all the provisions God has given, even the basics of food and clothings.

We will also gain freedom from the lustful desires to grab and covet more material things. But covetousness often leads to unnecessary comparisons, worries, and the idolatry of money.

Philippians 4:11-13
11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:
12 I know how to be abased, and I know how to abound. Everywhere and in all things I have learned both to be full and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
13 I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

Whatever our circumstances are, we need to learn how to be satisfied with the things we already have and with everything that happens in our life. We need to know how to live when we are poor. And we need to know how to live when we have plenty.

We need to learn the secret of being happy at any time and in every circumstance we are in. To be happy when we have enough to eat and when we do not have enough to eat. To be happy when we have all that we need and when we do not have the things we need. We can do all things through Christ because He gives us strength. We need to learn to be contented in any situation, whether facing plenty or hunger, through the divine strength of Christ.

How do we cultivate godly contentment? We need to grow and deepen in our relationship with God. We need to know the attributes of God, and His promises and provisions. We need to communicate with Him more, in times of prayer and worship.

We also need to embrace God's will, seeking to be satisfied with God's plan for our life, and understanding that a faithful life will bear fruit eventually, and fruit more abundantly!

As we focus on spiritual wealth, our eyes will turn to Jesus. We then will recognize that true wealth is found in godliness and contentment with God's provisions, rather than in material or earthly possessions.

Truly, godliness with contentment is great gain.
