The Judgment Seat Of Christ

2 Corinthians 5:10
For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.

Whether we like it or not, we would all have to stand before Christ to be judged. Each one will receive what he should get. Whether good or bad, it will depend on the things he had done while he lived on earth.

Romans 8:1
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit.

But why do Christians need to appear before the judgment seat of Christ if there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus?

Before we can answer this, we need to know that there will be two judgments:

• the Judgment Seat of Christ (or Bema Seat) for believers
• the Great White Throne Judgment for unbelievers

Revelation 20

Satan Bound 1,000 Years
1 Then I saw an angel coming down from heaven, having the key to the bottomless pit and a great chain in his hand.

2 He laid hold of the dragon, that serpent of old, who is the Devil and Satan, and bound him for a thousand years;

3 and he cast him into the bottomless pit, and shut him up, and set a seal on him, so that he should deceive the nations no more till the thousand years were finished. But after these things he must be released for a little while.

The Saints Reign with Christ 1,000 Years
4 And I saw thrones, and they sat on them, and judgment was committed to them. Then I saw the souls of those who had been beheaded for their witness to Jesus and for the word of God, who had not worshiped the beast or his image, and had not received his mark on their foreheads or on their hands. And they lived and reigned with Christ for a thousand years.

5 But the rest of the dead did not live again until the thousand years were finished. This is the first resurrection.

6 Blessed and holy is he who has part in the first resurrection. Over such the second death has no power, but they shall be priests of God and of Christ, and shall reign with Him a thousand years.

Satanic Rebellion Crushed
7 Now when the thousand years have expired, Satan will be released from his prison

8 and will go out to deceive the nations which are in the four corners of the earth, Gog and Magog, to gather them together to battle, whose number is as the sand of the sea.

9 They went up on the breadth of the earth and surrounded the camp of the saints and the beloved city. And fire came down from God out of heaven and devoured them.

10 The devil, who deceived them, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone where the beast and the false prophet are. And they will be tormented day and night forever and ever.

The Great White Throne Judgment
11 Then I saw a great white throne and Him who sat on it, from whose face the earth and the heaven fled away. And there was found no place for them.

12 And I saw the dead, small and great, standing before God, and books were opened. And another book was opened, which is the Book of Life. And the dead were judged according to their works, by the things which were written in the books.

13 The sea gave up the dead who were in it, and Death and Hades delivered up the dead who were in them. And they were judged, each one according to his works.

14 Then Death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death.

15 And anyone not found written in the Book of Life was cast into the lake of fire.

After Satan was bound for 1000 years, the dead in Christ will be resurrected. This is the first resurrection. The believers will be judged first.

1 Peter 4:17
For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the end of those who do not obey the gospel of God?

Revelation 11:18
The nations were angry, and Your wrath has come,
And the time of the dead, that they should be judged,
And that You should reward Your servants the prophets and the saints,
And those who fear Your name, small and great,
And should destroy those who destroy the earth.”

At the Judgment Seat of Christ, those who are in the first resurrection will be judged. Yes, those believers in Christ would be judged first. It will happen in heaven after the rapture.

The purpose of this judgment is not to determine salvation or eternal punishment. They were saved already by Christ as they believed. This judgment is to reward a believer's faithfulness, stewardship, and service. The faithful ones will receive eternal crowns and prizes.

Romans 14:10-12
10 But why do you judge your brother? Or why do you show contempt for your brother? For we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.
11 For it is written:
“As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall confess to God.”
12 So then each of us shall give account of himself to God.

This is where Christians will give an account of their earthly lives to receive rewards or not. This judgment is not for condemnation and eternal punishment.

The judgment seat of Christ is also known as the bēma seat. In ancient times, a bēma was a raised platform where a judge sat to award prizes to the winners of a contest.

1 Corinthians 3:12-15
12 Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw,
13 each one’s work will become clear; for the Day will declare it, because it will be revealed by fire; and the fire will test each one’s work, of what sort it is.
14 If anyone’s work which he has built on it endures, he will receive a reward.
15 If anyone’s work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire.

This is not a place of eternal punishment to determine whether saved or not. This is a place where the faithful ones will receive their crowns and prizes.

Good deeds and pure motives are compared to gold, silver, and precious stones. Wasteful actions or selfish motives are compared to wood, hay, and straw. A fire test will show the true value of each person's work. Lasting works bring rewards or crowns. But burned works mean a loss of rewards, though the person is still saved.

The saints would reign with Christ for 1,000 years.

After the 1,000 years, Satan would be released to deceive the nations for a period. He would then be defeated, and be thrown into the eternal lake of fire.

After that, all the other dead will be resurrected. This is the second resurrection.

Then the Great White Throne Judgment would begin. Who would be judged? Unbelievers and the spiritually unrepentant from all ages. This will happen at the end of the Millennium, and right before the creation of the new heaven and new earth.

Its purpose is to give a final sentencing hearing where earthly deeds are reviewed from the records, and names are checked against the Book of Life. Those not found in the Book of Life will result in eternal condemnation, and they would be thrown into the lake of fire.

The judgment seat of Christ is for a forgiven Christian to give an account of his life. Each Christian will be judged. Not for the guilt of sins, but for his fruits he bears. Whether receiving rewards or not, the Righteous Judge will know, and reward righteously.
