Nisan 1
The Jews have a Civil and a Sacred Calendar.
The Civil Calendar is
used for the dates of childbirth and contracts.
The Sacred Calendar
is used for the dates of religious feasts and festivals.
Before Exodus 12, the first month of the year was Tishri but after
Exodus 12, it was changed to Nisan by God.
Exodus 12:2
"This month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first
month of the year to you."
Nisan is called the "First Month," because it is the Month of
Redemption, the month of the Exodus of the Jewish people from
slavery in Egypt, the House of Bondage. It is also called the
springtime month, because the Hebrew Calendar is set up so that the
month will fall in spring.
The first day of the first month of the year marks a new beginning! A new
beginning for the past to be forgiven and forgotten, and a new
spring to begin life right with God.
Nisan 1 marks the beginning of a spiritual cleansing and renewal
for the people of God.
What had happened on the first day of the
first month throughout history?
•House Cleaning or Spring Cleaning (Exodus 12:1-20)
Now the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,
2 “This
month shall be your beginning of months; it shall be the first month
of the year to you.
3 Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying: ‘On the tenth of
this month every man shall take for himself a lamb, according to the
house of his father, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household
is too small for the lamb, let him and his neighbor next to his
house take it according to the number of the persons; according to
each man’s need you shall make your count for the lamb. 5 Your lamb
shall be
without blemish,
a male of the first year. You may take it from the sheep or from the
goats. 6 Now you shall keep it
until the fourteenth day
of the same month. Then the whole assembly of the congregation of
Israel shall kill it at twilight…….19 For seven days
no leaven shall be found in your houses,
since whoever eats what is leavened, that same person shall be cut
off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or a
native of the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your
dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread.’”
•The Tabernacle Setup (Exodus 40:1-35)
Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “On the
first day of the first month
you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting…..16 Thus
Moses did; according to all that the LORD had commanded him, so he
did. 17 And it came to pass
in the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month,
that the
tabernacle was raised up….
33 And he raised up the court all around the tabernacle and the
altar, and hung up the screen of the court gate.
So Moses finished the work.
34 Then the cloud covered the tabernacle of meeting, and
the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
35 And Moses
was not able to enter
the tabernacle of meeting, because the cloud rested above it, and
the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.
•Cleansing The Temple (2 Chr 29:1-30:27)
Hezekiah became king when he was twenty-five years old, and he
reigned twenty-nine years in Jerusalem. His mother’s name was Abijah
the daughter of Zechariah. 2 And he did
what was right in the sight of the LORD, according to all
that his father David had done. 3 In the first year of his reign,
in the first month,
he opened the doors of the
house of the LORD and repaired them. 4 Then he brought in the
priests and the Levites, and gathered them in the East Square, 5 and
said to them: “Hear me, Levites! Now
sanctify yourselves, sanctify the house of the LORD God of your
fathers, and carry out the rubbish from the holy place.
6 For our fathers have trespassed and
done evil in the eyes of the LORD our God; they have forsaken Him,
have turned their faces away from the dwelling place of the LORD,
and turned their backs on Him. 7 They have also shut up the doors of
the vestibule, put out the lamps, and have not burned incense or
offered burnt offerings in the holy place to the God of Israel.
8 Therefore the wrath of the LORD fell upon Judah and
Jerusalem, and He has given them up to trouble, to desolation, and
to jeering, as you see with your eyes. 9 For indeed, because of this
our fathers have fallen by the sword; and our sons, our daughters,
and our wives are in captivity. 10 “Now it is in my heart to make a
covenant with the LORD God of Israel, that His fierce wrath may turn
away from us. 11 My sons, do not be negligent now, for the LORD has
chosen you to stand before Him, to serve Him, and that you should
minister to Him and burn incense.”…..15 And they gathered their
brethren, sanctified themselves, and went according to the
commandment of the king, at the words of the LORD, to cleanse the
house of the LORD. 16 Then the priests
went into the inner part of the house of the LORD to cleanse it, and
brought out all the debris that they found in the temple of the LORD
to the court of the house of the LORD. And the Levites took
it out and carried it to the Brook Kidron.17 Now they
began to sanctify on the first day of
the first month, and on the eighth day of the month they came
to the vestibule of the LORD. So they sanctified the house of the
LORD in eight days, and on the
sixteenth day of the first month they finished.
(Note: They took 16 days to
clear all the rubbish in the Temple!)18 Then they went in
to King Hezekiah and said, “We have cleansed all the house of the
LORD, the altar of burnt offerings with all its articles, and the
table of the showbread with all its articles. 19
Moreover all the articles which King
Ahaz in his reign had cast aside in his transgression we have
prepared and sanctified; and there they are, before the altar of the
LORD.” 20 Then King Hezekiah rose early, gathered the rulers
of the city, and went up to the house of the LORD. 21 And they
brought seven bulls, seven rams, seven lambs, and seven male goats
for a sin offering for the kingdom, for the sanctuary, and for
Judah. Then he commanded the priests, the sons of Aaron, to offer
them on the altar of the LORD.…25 And he stationed the Levites in
the house of the LORD with cymbals, with stringed instruments, and
with harps, according to the commandment of David, of Gad the king’s
seer, and of Nathan the prophet; for thus was the commandment of the
LORD by His prophets. 26 The Levites stood with the instruments of
David, and the priests with the trumpets……31 Then Hezekiah answered
and said, “Now that you have
consecrated yourselves to the LORD, come near, and bring
sacrifices and thank offerings into the house of the LORD.” So the
assembly brought in sacrifices and thank offerings, and as many as
were of a willing heart brought burnt offerings….35 Also the burnt
offerings were in abundance, with the fat of the peace offerings and
with the drink offerings for every burnt offering.
So the service of the house of the LORD
was set in order. 36 Then Hezekiah and all the people
rejoiced that God had prepared the people, since the events took
place so suddenly.
Some Notes About Delayed Passover:
·
2 Chr 30:1
Hezekiah wrote letters to the tribes of Israel that they should come
to the house of the LORD at Jerusalem
to keep the Passover to the LORD God of Israel
in the second month as they
could not keep it at the regular time, because a sufficient number
of priests had not consecrated themselves, nor had the people
gathered together at Jerusalem.
·
2 Chr 30:6
The
runners went throughout all Israel and Judah with the letters from
the king and his leaders.
·
2 Chr 30:7-9
And
do not be like your fathers and your brethren, who trespassed
against the LORD God of their fathers, so that He gave them up to
desolation, as you see. 8 Now do not be
stiff-necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the
LORD; and enter His sanctuary, which He has sanctified
forever, and serve the LORD your God, that the fierceness of His
wrath may turn away from you. 9 For if
you return to the LORD, your brethren and your children will
be treated with compassion by those who lead them captive, so that
they may come back to this land; for the LORD your God is gracious
and merciful, and will not turn His face from you if you return to
Him.”
·
2 Chr 30:10-12
So the runners passed from city to city through the country of
Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun; but
they laughed at them and mocked them.
11 Nevertheless some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled
themselves and came to Jerusalem. 12 Also the hand of God was on
Judah to give them singleness of heart
to obey the command of the king and the leaders, at the word
of the LORD.
·
2
Chr 30:13-14 Now many people, a very great assembly, gathered
at Jerusalem to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second
month. 14 They arose and took away the
altars that were in Jerusalem, and they
took away all the incense altars and
cast them into the Brook Kidron.
·
2 Chr 30:18-20
For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim, Manasseh,
Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed
themselves, yet they ate the Passover contrary to what was
written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, “May the good LORD
provide atonement for everyone 19 who prepares his heart to seek
God, the LORD God of his fathers, though he is not cleansed
according to the purification of the sanctuary.” 20 And
the LORD listened
to Hezekiah
and healed the people.
·
2 Chr 30:21-22
So the children of Israel who were present at Jerusalem kept the
Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with great gladness; and the
Levites and the priests praised the LORD day by day, singing to the
LORD, accompanied by loud instruments. 22 And Hezekiah gave
encouragement to all the Levites who taught the good knowledge of
the LORD; and they ate throughout the
feast seven days, offering peace offerings and making
confession to the LORD God of their fathers.
·
2 Chr 30:23-27
Then the whole assembly agreed to keep the feast
another seven days, and they
kept it another seven days with
gladness. 24 For Hezekiah king of Judah gave to the assembly
a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep, and the leaders gave to
the assembly a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep; and a great
number of priests sanctified themselves. 25 The whole assembly of
Judah rejoiced, also the priests and Levites, all the assembly that
came from Israel, the sojourners who came from the land of Israel,
and those who dwelt in Judah. 26 So
there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon the
son of David, king of Israel, there had been nothing like this in
Jerusalem. 27 Then the priests, the Levites, arose and blessed the
people, and their voice was heard; and their prayer came up to His
holy dwelling place, to heaven.
•Return To Jerusalem (Ezra 7:9-10)
On the first day of the first month
he began his journey from Babylon, and on the first day of
the fifth month he came to Jerusalem, according to the good hand of
his God upon him. 10 For Ezra had prepared his heart to seek the Law
of the LORD, and to do it, and to teach statutes and ordinances in
Israel.
•Dealing With National Sins (Ezra 10:17)
By the first day of the first month
they finished questioning all the men who had taken pagan
wives.
•Cleansing The Temple (Eze 45:18)
‘Thus says the LORD God: “In the first
month, on the first day of the month, you shall take a young
bull without blemish and cleanse the
sanctuary.
•The Coming Of The Latter Rain (Joel 2:23-29)
Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your
God; for He has given you the former rain faithfully, and He will
cause the rain to come down for you -
the former rain, and the latter rain in
the first month. 24 The threshing floors shall be full of
wheat, and the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil. 25 “So I
will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten,
the crawling locust, the consuming locust, and the chewing locust,
My great army which I sent among you. 26 You shall eat in plenty and
be satisfied, and praise the name of the LORD your God, Who has
dealt wondrously with you; and My people shall never be put to
shame. 27 Then you shall know that I am in the midst of Israel: I am
the LORD your God and there is no other. My people shall never be
put to shame. 28 “And it shall come to pass afterward that I will
pour out My Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall
prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, your young men shall see
visions. 29 And also on My menservants and on My maidservants I will
pour out My Spirit in those days.
•Jesus Cleansed The Temple (Matthew 21:12-14)
Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all those who
bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the
money changers and the seats of those who sold doves.13 And He said
to them, “It is written, ‘My house shall
be called a house of prayer,’ but you have made it a ‘den of
thieves.’” 14 Then the blind and the lame came to Him in the
temple, and He healed them.
I strongly believe that a new beginning is dawning and beginning to
take place in our times. But before that can happen, God is sending
His rain to cleanse us from deep within, removing all the rubbish in
His Holy Sanctuary and sanctifying us so that His House will no
longer be called a den of thieves but a House of Prayer for all
nations!
After cleansing the Temple, the glory of the LORD will return. ‘The
glory of this latter Temple shall be greater than the former,’ says
the LORD of hosts (Haggai 2:9). And healing will take place!
